Case #6: Playtime with Mikey

In the wake of Candle Cove going on hiatus, a new show has taken up its timeslot: Playtime with Mikey. It is just as unsettling (if not moreso) as the previous show.

Playtime with Mikey is ostensibly a children's show featuring songs and a man with an Australian accent in a monkey costume. The costume, however, looks old and worn and dirty, and is too large for whomever is inside, as it sags everywhere. As you can imagine, this makes the song-and-dance numbers somewhat disconcerting and surreal.

But the true creep factor comes not from the costume, but the song lyrics and the indescribable myriad colors constantly shifting and swirling around the screen. These colors actually hurt the eyes (unlike Candle Cove, this show apparently can be seen by anyone, as I saw this one with my own eyes).

As for the songs, the music is often flat and dissonant, while the the lyrics seem fine at first, only to take on new horror (especially combined with these other elements).

An example (a song sung in every episode):

Playtime...with Mikey!

Is very, very fun!

Playtime...oh, crikey!

Oh no--he's got a gun!

Once you have arrived

You'll never want to leave,

For if you ever try,

Your parents he will cleave!

(With an axe!)

Playtime...with Mikey!

Is very, very fun!

Playtime...oh, crikey!

Oh no--he's got a gun!

He'll teach you how to hate!

Come on, let's dance and play!

It's really, really great!

Join in so he can say

(Really loud!):

"Playtime...with Mikey!

Is very, very fun!

Playtime...with Mikey!

Your soul now I have won!"

Fortunately, it looks like none of this sort of thing actually takes place on the show. It is unknown who or what is behind this new show, but it can't be good.
